Can you rate Solid Gold Duck and Pumpkin vs Blue Buffalo Wilderness rabbit?
ReplyDeleteMy cats have been on Wild Blue Buffalo for a long time. But my middle cat has had both crystals in bladder and packed anal glands, So I am trying to decide which would be better? Any thoughts on these 2 in a side by side comparison?
THanks in advance...Michelle
Hello. First, I am not a vet so I can't give you any treatment recommendations. However, I would be glad to rate those foods for you and give you my opinion on which might be better (but again, I'm not a vet). First off, I'm not sure which type of crystals your kitty has had (struvite, oxalate, or urate). These can be caused by various things. Struvite crystals are usually caused by too high of a urine pH and/or too much magnesium in the diet (too much magnesium can cause a high pH). However, the other two types can form in acidic urine (low pH). Oxalate crystals can form from too much sodium, protein, calcium or vitamin D (or too little water, which is likely the bigger issue in many cases). If the crystals are struvite, selecting a diet low in magnesium (the Blue Buffalo Rabbit actually has the same "guaranteed" level of magnesium as some of the urinary prescription foods) would help. The Solid Gold doesn’t seem to have magnesium levels listed on the website so I cannot say for SURE what they are. I doubt they are very high because most cat foods nowadays do not add too much. If the crystals are either of the other two types, the best bet might be adding some canned food to your cats’ diets (if they will eat it). This doesn’t mean you have to feed ALL canned food, but adding some will help “flush out” the bladder and prevent crystals from forming. As for the ratings of the two foods (and I removed the “insignificant” ingredients from the foods to save some space), I am adding a separate reply to your comment below.

Overall, these two foods are both really good. Depending on what type of crystals formed, you MIGHT want to switch to the lower protein/phosphorus of the two (the Solid Gold) but adding canned food (if you are not already feeding it) would be my first change before ANYTHING else. How old is the kitty with the problems?
